Control System Replacement

The WD offshore jack-up vessel, is the largest vessel in Ziton’s fleet.The vessel is powered by six Bergen Engines C25:33 diesel generator sets. Originally, these engines were fitted with Woodward UG actuators controlled by Woodward 723+ digital governors.

As part of a modernization upgrade, both the actuators and digital governors were replaced by Regulateurs Europa (RE). The existing UG actuators were upgraded to RE type 2221 hydraulic actuators, while the Woodward 723+ governors were replaced with RE XIOS digital governors. In addition, new start-air boosters were installed.

Regulateurs Europa has developed dedicated software to enable communication with the Bergen Engines PLC. The PLC collects data from the electronic governor via Modbus, using the ASCII protocol. Although this protocol was not originally supported by our software, our software development team successfully implemented the required functionality.

The Bergen Engines PLC communicates with both the Kongsberg alarm and monitoring system and the local HMI installed on the engine. This additional communication capability was required to facilitate the monthly FMEA testing procedure.

The system operates in droop mode, with the active power (kW) load being controlled by the vessel's Power Management System (PMS).
